Valentine's Day - More giving!

Happy Valentine's Day! A day Americans set aside to show those close to us that we love them. We show those around us that we appreciate them and do a little extra to show that we care.
Why? Why are we so passionate about Valentine's Day? Why do we get cards for ALL of our family members? Why do we get the delicious international box of chocolates for those that we love? Because we give to what we are passionate about. We not only love our family members, we are passionate about them.
We love to give the singing monkeys, the poofy puppies and the delicious candy because of the love and passion we have for others.
Our passion drives us to give. We give our time, we give gifts, we show those we love that we are passionate about them.
What is your passion? What drives you to give?
Have a wonderful Valentine's Day - and enjoy giving.

The Hairy Shrimp
Yes, this is a real shrimp that I had from a restaurant. I understand that it isn't hairy - but you have to agree that it is a bit weird looking. The thing that gave me the idea about this story is that when I held it up to show my Mom, the waitress was over at the table in a flash asking if everything was OK. She was extremely concerned. I told assured her that everything was fine and we continued on with our meal. I was impressed with the speed and concern that she showed us.
So, by now you must be wondering what in the world this has to do with Spreading Joy. I was relieved to see such customer service. Lately there is a lot of talk that people just don't care - but that isn't true. There are some wonderful people giving great customer service.
But....on to the next part of this entry. (You knew there was a catch didn't you?)
What about those of us that expect perfect customer service? Do you blame the waitress if the food isn't right? Why? She didn't cook it. When things heat up at the restaurant, you have an awesome chance of Spreading Joy! Your actions could literally make or break someones day. You don't know what they have been through and how you handle yourself could make a huge difference in someones day - all without costing you any more than your meal.
I was with my Mom (whom I totally adore) and daughter (adore her too) and we were eating out at my favorite restaurant for dinner when it happened. "Oh my gosh" I said to my Mom and started laughing. I was eating my delicious homemade smashed potatoes when I saw it. At first I was unsure of what it was because it was triangular shaped and black. Could it be a guitar pick? We were still laughing because I actually even asked if it was a boomerang. I don't even begin to know why in the world I thought it was a miniature boomerang - I must be losing my mind. So, by this point, me being the silly person that I am - I'm laughing and crying because I keep hearing myself asking my mom about the boomerang. We fish out the triangular substance and realize that it is folded over. We unfold it and finally figured out that it was the label from the potato. How funny is that? We are laughing so hard that no one around us realizes that "something" was in my food.
Knowing that all potatoes at the fine establishment is washed very carefully, I decided that we must inform the manager. I'm serious. I did not want a free meal and I did not (and told her so) want the cook or any of the preparers to get into any kind of trouble - I simply wanted to let them know that they need to watch for those pesky labels. Plain and simple. (Joy at it's best!)
She was a little surprised. I didn't want any trouble and in fact we were still laughing at my ridiculous suggestion of boomerang. I just wanted to keep them from having any future troubles out of their customers. I know that people have a bad day and then the food that you are purchasing isn't right and things tend to go down hill from there, but sometimes it just gets out of control.
We enjoyed our meal, tipped our Waiter nicely and headed back out to enjoy the remainder of our day.
That experience could have cost someone their job (depending on how many times they had messed up before) or at the very least, caused a Manager of a fine Restaurant to think that some Witch Hazel will really give some bad word of mouth advertising. But no - everyone enjoyed their evening and hopefully a Manager went home and told her husband - you are not going to believe what happened....but these silly ladies..... Hopefully a Manager realized that someone really cares about helping others and Spreading Joy and isn't out there to skin alive those that mess up.
Am I going to receive bad customer service - probably. How will I handle it? Who knows, but it is my desire to handle it the way I would want someone to treat me when I mess up.My joy for that day - ease the Managers mind while letting them know that some labels are so much in love with their potatoes that they do not want to let go!
That's what I consider true generosity. You give your all, and yet you always feel as if it costs you nothing. - Simone De Beauvoir

Motivate Thyself!

I had a wonderful vacation at the beach. I fully expected to come back recharged, energized and ready to tackle the world. I came back sick. Two ear infections and a sinus infection. Felt horrible for days on end. I took medicine and am "feeling" better, but I'm just not as motivated as I need to be. I've got to get myself motivated. No one is going to get the word out about all of the ideas I have for Spreading Joy Corporation. No one is going to arrange the free community seminars, no one is going to make my joy packs and give them out for me, no one is going to find seek and find great deals on children's books for me. (I'm sure one day there will be people volunteering and helping with these items for SJC, but for now - I know that I'm responsible for much of what needs to be accomplished.) I have to get this going myself. I think much of it comes from the fact that I'm still not feeling 100%, but I know that I have to motivate myself if Spreading Joy Corporation is still going to be around 3 years from now. How do I do that? How do I move beyond not feeling well and doing what needs to be done in spite of that. I've been thinking about it and here is what I've come up with:
- Look at the end result - I have to look ahead to the future to where I would like to be. I will not get there if I'm not working my way there. If I want to be able to help all of the people in my target areas (the homeless, the inner city kids, the battered women, the orphans in the USA as well as outside the USA and our elderly) then I'm going to need a network of several thousand people that I can call and say "I think this will be a good fit for you, something that tugs on your heart's string" and have help coming from all sorts of places. An army of people that have a heart for making a difference and for Spreading Joy. I have so much to learn along this journey.
- Look at the present - I have to focus on NOW. I definitely just went to the other end of the spectrum from my previous point, but it is true. Now is the time that people will be needing help with no strings attached. Now is the time that small food pantries will be called upon to help more struggling families even though they really can't afford to purchase food from Second Harvest Food Bank. Now is the time that smiles need to be handed out freely. Pure Joy - handed out everywhere. Doing something to uplift another everyday. Spreading Joy TODAY!
- Motivate others - Motivating and encouraging others will come full circle and motivate me. How can I encourage others to go, do and give if I'm not motivated myself. I love giving and doing for others and I need simply get out there and do it. I need to find the discouraged and encourage them. I need to send encouraging emails and make phone calls to those who need a pick me up. In doing so, the receipt may realize just how helpful it was to them and turn around and do the same for someone else.
- Look beyond the obstacles - There are so many obstacles facing start ups today and the biggest is money. Right now, because there are no consistent funding for Spreading Joy Corporation, I have to help people in ways that are "free". I'm working on getting together some free community seminars and offering help with resumes at no cost, but there are so many things that needs to be done. If I had the volunteers, we could blanket several communities and pass out fliers announcing a food drive. Families could just leave a bag of food on their porch on a certain day and we could pick it up and help restock the shelves of those that are taking care of struggling families. If I had new or gently used clothing, toys and books - I could make sure they were given to those that would greatly appreciate them. These are just a few of the obstacles that we are facing. I will look past them and keep giving until I can give at the level I desire. That is the key. Doing what you can with the resources that are available to you, regardless of the obstacles.
- Print off and focus on my goals - I listed my goals in previous posts, but I need to print them off and keep them handy. Doing something towards each of them on a daily basis is the only way to keep focused and move forward. Even if it is at a slow and steady pace, that is better than no moving in any direction or worse yet, going backwards. Even if it is 10 phone calls a day, 10 faxes a day or mailing out 10 letters a week, focusing on what I want to accomplish will motivate me. I'll see that there is a dent being made in my to do list and that the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter by the hour.
Do you have a mountain of papers to go through? (Yes, that is work that is waiting on me. The table was full earlier this week.) Do you have a "to do" list the size of Texas? Do you need to get into an exercise routine? Do you want to be debt free? Motivate Thyself! You can do it! Piece by piece, day by day.
What do you do to motivate yourself? I'm sure you have great ways of motivating yourself! How do you keep yourself going? Do you help others when they are working through a rough, boring patch?
How are you Spreading Joy? Are you helping the homeless, the elderly, inner city kids? Are Women's needs close to your heart? So many choices! What choice are you making?~ To give without any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own. ~

Internet goals for 2009
- Post consistent articles that will encourage, motivate and remind other about the lasting joy of giving.
- Focus on the quality of the posts.
- Reach 700-1000 subscribers - This one scares me. Being so new and learning how to "get the word out" is more difficult than I had imagined.
- Figure out twitter and see if it will be a proper tool to increase traffic, gain more contacts and simply learn more about the Internet resources.
- Get on Face book and utilize it to gain readership.
- SJC already has a web site, figure out how to put this blog there without having to link to it.
- Learn to make any amount of money for SJC from this blog.
- Learn from the best of the best - engage via comments with the blogs that I keep up with to learn as much as I possibly can.
- Use the blog as a platform to show how others are making a difference - which will encourage those that think their "little bit" doesn't matter.
- Learn more about Stumble upon and Digg and how those tools can benefit this blog.
There you have it. It seems that I have a lot of Internet learning to do, but I actually love to learn. I'll be seeking out all the answers in the various blogs that I keep up with and hopefully - just maybe, someone reading this list will have a heart and help me "learn" all that is needed to be able to complete these goals.
I'm very excited about these goals and the possibilities that will be available once I have completed them!
I'm also thankful for Daniel @ Daily Blog Tips for issuing the challenge!

Christmas Joy Fundraiser Update
Spreading Joy is dedicated to reminding people that you don't have to give "big" to make a huge difference! You must simply decide to give and with that very decision, you will be taking the first step to making a HUGE difference!Getting into the habit of finding ways to make a difference daily is such an easy thing to do. No matter your current situation, there are ways you can make a difference.
Here are a few FREE ways:
1. Tear off those box tops for education and turn them in. (that is money in the TRASH if you don't)
2. Search the internet using www.goodsearch.com and choose Spreading Joy Corporation as your organization that you search for.
3. Compliment someone - words of encouragement can help boost someone's self esteem or even carry them through the day.
4. Do yard work/house work for the elderly in your neighborhood.
5. Send a handwritten card to someone who has encouraged or motivated you to let them know the difference they made in your life.
Here are some inexpensive ways of Spreading Joy:
1. Make a double batch of cookies/brownies and share
2. Love those buy one/get one free - bring in your "free" one's for a food drive
3. Unwrap a smile - Little Debbie Cakes are so delicious - and everyone loves them.
4. Krispy Kreme doughnuts - Oh my goodness - if you live near one of these - you really should spread some joy to those around you when the LIGHT IS ON!!!
There are so many more ideas on our website in the Calendar section. http://www.spreadingjoycorp.com/page/page/6260832.htm
The Christmas Joy fundraiser is in full swing and we are working on getting as many toys donated for Christmas as possible. Our goal is a lofty one - 2000 toys! We have been asking for toys that are valued at $5.00-10.00. We have 4 companies that are hosting toy drives for us:
Author Squad (www.authorsquad.com) in Huntersville NC (you can drop toys off here)
Robinson Bradshaw Hinson - Charlotte
FreemanWhite Associates - Charlotte
Patterson Pope - Charlotte
We have several boxes in place so that toys can be dropped off anytime:
Qdobas - S. Tryon St.
Planet Beach - Whitehall * S. Tryon St.
Quiznos - Whitehall & Arrowwood
Quiznos - Hwy 16 & 73 in Denver
The biggest thing we need now are items that are good for Teen Boys and 495 more McDonald Gift Cards valued at $5.00 each.
I sent an email out with the hopes that some McDonalds Gift Cards will be sent in. I know it is a HUGE thing to try and get 500 gift cards donated, but working together, forwarding the email and spreading the word will allow us to reach our goal. I know there is a lot of last minute shopping happening and funds are tight this year, but if we are creative we can accomplish this goal.
Just think, if 99 people purchase 5 gift cards, the goal will be met. Some people may be able to do more, others less - but if we work together, it is something we can make happen and be proud of.
All gifts will be properly receipted for your tax purposes. Please - if you can send any amount of McDonald's gift cards, send to:
Spreading Joy Corporation
7795 Clover Ln.
Denver NC 28037
Joy is defined as "the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying"
Joy does not depend on great circumstances or trouble free finances! True joy is available every time you give something or do something for others!

Thank you for how you are spreading joy! Be it with gift cards, a gift in one of the boxes or spreading the word about the Christmas Joy fundraiser - you are making a difference!

Count down to Thanksgiving
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches I, like many other Americans, will think of all that I am thankful for. I'll think of days past and the memories that help me through. I'll look to the future and wonder, what will the days ahead bring. It is during this time of the year that many of us think about how blessed we are and how we can take the time to make the world around us a better place. We give back a little of what has been given to us.
I have so many HUGE dreams of making a difference. Sometimes I feel as if I'll never get there, but I know I have to keep plugging away, one day at a time. My goal is that Spreading Joy Corporation will have an impact on millions of lives. I want to have individual divisions for each of the areas that I have a vision for. I want to add new divisions, such as an area for children in the Hospital. I'd love to be able to go into hospitals and visit the children and leave them a brand new Curious George book - but where do I get 100 copies at a next to nothing price?
I don't want this post to be about what I need, although I truly do need to set some solid goals for next year. I want to talk about the things that I'm thankful for, the things that you may not even realize that you are thankful for as well.
- I'm thankful for the opportunity to make a difference this year with SJC. Given the time that I filed for my tax exempt status, I never expected to be approved this year. I was surprised when I received my notification and knew that I wanted to do something within this year. Will we make my goal of 2000 toys? I don't know, but I'm so grateful for the chance to try!
- I'm thankful for the people that pushed me to organize SJC. As I talked about a dream of making a difference and starting a Non Profit Organization, several people kept after me to keep going. Even after I had tucked my SJC folder away in the back of my desk for "later" - they kept bringing it up. Thank you!
- I'm thankful for the difficult times this year. I know I have so much to learn, but this year has allowed me to be able to get a look at what I'll need to do for next year. I'll know that it isn't easy getting people to say "yes, you can put a wrapped box in our organization..." or "yes, we'll send you 100 Barbie dolls." I'll have a chance to get more organized, to get posters printed for next year's Christmas Joy and will have some experience to draw from. I have to keep learning from the hard times, keep growing through the difficulties.
- I'm thankful for the people I've met along the way. Just in the past few months, I've met some incredible people. Some - only through the Internet, others in person. I'm always amazed at how these great people make me a better person. There is so much good out there but sometimes the negative seems to cover it up. As I gain more contacts, make more friends and meet people while looking for partners and other opportunities, I know their knowledge and great habits will rub off on me and help me grow.
- I'm thankful for being pushed out of my comfort zone. I like talking, (long blogs an indicator???) probably more than most people. Next year, as I look for financial partners, I will be doing presentations and getting into social networks more and more. This is a whole new level of talking for me. I've done presentations before, but never ones that had so much riding on them. If I do not present my vision and my passion effectively, then I will not have financial support. If I do not get my business plan up to snuff (and trust me, it needs lots of work) then how many men, women, children and elderly will it affect? Oh, No pressure - none at all. This is going to be a new world to explore for me. I know it will help me and allow me to meet even more great people who have a desire of Spreading Joy on a daily basis.
So, how about it? I know you are thankful for your family, home, job, friends and Krispy Kreme doughnuts - but what else are you thankful for? Have you been forced to step out of your comfort zone this year? How did that help you? Have you had difficulties that were horrible while you were in it? Think of how great it is now that you are through them. (If you aren't on the other side of difficulties yet...be patient, you'll get there.) Have you met people that have influenced you this year? Have you told them thank you? Have you taken the opportunities that have come your way? What are you thankful for?

The Joy of Choices
I wanted to share with you some ways that others are Spreading Joy. I hope that checking out these other blogs will encourage and motivate you to start looking for ways of spreading joy. They are right there in front of you. You just have to get yourself into the habit of looking for the opportunities.
- Blog Action Day - where thousands of "Professional Bloggers" blogged about poverty and what can be done about it. A great way of Spreading Joy while working to end hunger.
- 1000 Mitzvahs - I came across this website and just fell in love with it. Linda is working her way towards 1000 Mitzvahs (acts of kindness) and is at number 785! What an exciting adventure! I can't wait until she hits 1000!
- 25 Days to Make a Difference - Laura, a young lady (not sure of her age) decided to take the pain of the loss of her Grandfather and turn it into something that would have made him proud. She is making a difference for an organization each month. "I decided to honor my grandfather’s memory by trying to make a difference every day for twenty five days. I wanted to be able to do little things, like kids my age typically do, instead of HUGE things that are sometimes hard for kids like me." Check her out, she is really inspiring.
- Author Squad - in Huntersville NC will have a Giving Tree in their store beginning November 1st. The tree will be full of tags with ages of boys and girls that you can make a difference for this Christmas. They are gracious enough to give a 20% discount on a purchase made for the Giving Tree. All of the items collected will be giving to Christmas Joy for Spreading Joy.
- Spreading Joy's Calendar of ideas - This is where you can find ideas for ways of spreading joy and making a difference. Most are low cost or even free while others range in cost. Keep in mind that even when you feel you can't afford to give anything that you have "time" you can give. When it comes to time, no one is more wealthy than another - we all have the same amount.
These are just a few links to some of the many, many choices you have for Spreading Joy. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and Christmas is only 60 days away. You could help at a shelter or is there a family that you know is struggling? Why not get together a box of food and leave it on their porch? Or even take it to them and let them know you are thinking of them.
When we just concentrate on giving without focusing on how much, how big and will it change the world right now - we can (and will) make a difference. Focusing on the right here and now will allow you to see your giving as the true gift that it is. Everyone has something to give.
Right now, I simply can't give big (I'm talking Oprah big), but I can give of what I do have and do so happily. I can notice the opportunities and take the time to make a difference until I can actually give on a HUGE level! How about you? Is your heart feeling a little empty? Do you feel like your joy is nowhere to be found? What are you doing to get it back? How are you spreading joy? The choices are endless and the decision is up to you. There's no joy like spreading joy!
~"I have found that there is a tremendous joy in giving. It is a very important part of the joy of living." William Black, president of Chock Full O' Nuts Corp.~

The Joy of Giving ~John Greenleaf Whittier~
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others
Is the joy that comes back to you;
And the more you spend in blessing
The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing
Returns to make you glad.

Giving for the JOY of it

There are people who just love to give. I'd like to think of myself as one of those people. Giving is so much fun. I love searching for gifts, I love asking for items to be donated for others, I love giving things away.
There is a wonderful young lady that I usually tell her "when I grow up that I want to be just like you." She is a giver. She is a giver for the JOY of it. She is constantly looking for things to give and ways to give. She simply enjoys giving - she knows first hand the joy of Spreading Joy. Wonder Woman (name changed so she doesn't kill me because she gives - not for recognition - but simply for the joy of it.) had no idea on my birthday this year that I was working on Spreading Joy Corporation's application for tax exempt status. She did not know that I was even tossing any of these non profit ideas around or that Spreading Joy was a dream of mine. Knowing that I simply LOVE and adore and am totally addicted to coffee, (that delicious liquid gold) she gave a coffee cup for my birthday. Now, I know, you must be thinking - Ummm, ok then - whatever, but, along with big dreams comes a lot of scary things. Will I fail, will I succeed, will I be able to do this, work a full time job AND take 3 classes and take care of my family all at the same time? I had a lot of questions and the unknown is very scary. When I opened my gift - you would have thought she had just given me a million bucks! The coffee cup was a beautiful light blue color with one word on it. Bet you can't even begin to guess what it says. JOY - written in cursive with a star above it. I knew as I held my gift that things were going to work out. No matter what happens, no matter what comes my way, if I just remember that "There's no joy like Spreading Joy" - everything else will be ok. It was several days later that I gave Wonder Woman (also, Wonder Woman is my favorite superhero) a thank you card and I took the time to tell her about Spreading Joy. She remembered which cup she had given me and she knew in an instant that it encouraged me more than she even thought it would.
I'm so thankful that Wonder Woman is such a giver. She encourages me and motivates me to do more. I'm very thankful to be apart of Spreading Joy. I try to do at least one thing for someone every day. There are days when I do more, but at the very minimum, I want to be spreading joy somewhere, somehow - daily.
One of the things I love to do is give away McDonald's sundae's. They are only $1.00 and on a hot day they are such a nice treat. I usually get 5 at a time and then just give them to random people. Once, we (my children and I) took them to some construction workers. It was hot and late in the day. We simply walked up, handed them the entire tray, wished them a nice day and left. We didn't say we were spreading joy, we didn't ask them for anything - just gave it to them and left. They actually looked a little shocked, but I'm sure they enjoyed it.
I love giving. I love seeing how it encourages people, I love the genuine smile that comes from a freshly warmed heart. I love the hugs and the love from spreading joy.
Give - just for the Joy of it."You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others - something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it. " ~ Albert Schweitzer
